A Banarasi woven in pure tussar, where the buta are lifted by the kadwa method rather than floated across the ground. Each motif is woven as its own small event, so the reverse of the saree carries no cut threads and the cloth reads cleanly from both sides.

Tussar gives the piece its particular character: a dry, papery hand when new, a low sheen instead of a mirror shine, and a slub that catches light unevenly. It softens with wear and holds a deep, sculpted pleat.

Woven on a pit loom in Varanasi over roughly six weeks.

Handmade character
The minute variations of a handwoven textile are part of its identity. They are not defects, but evidence of the human hand.
